Opportunity:
Due to continued growth and development a fantastic opportunity ha come up to join a truly ambitious organisation as they look to grow their Database team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly skilled team, that will include helping to build a new SaaS-based system from the ground up - while also building on proven leading technologies and services. As the Cloud Database Architect & Administrator you will also play a central role in designing, implementing and also administering the AWS-hosted SQL and noSQL data management systems and schemas to help drive efficient service delivery, consistency, quality and security.




Key daily tasks involve:

• Driving and improving database and schema design, creation, and testing activities, also including the evaluation and recommendation of suitable cloud-hosted database technologies and types, and also the improvement of existing database and data store performance.
• Deploying, supporting and also administering SQL and NoSQL database instances in the production, staging and development environments.
• Overall responsibility for database availability and performance, including incident and problem management, security and auditing, logging, and defining and implementing monitoring, alerting and regular reporting on potential database performance or integrity issues.
• Performing database housekeeping tasks (such as performance tuning, indexing, query optimisations etc.) in collaboration with the Software Engineering Teams.
• Designing and implementing best-of-breed data backup, restoration, recovery, storage and archiving strategies.
• Creating and maintaining database standards, policies, SOPs and security standards.
• Working with the third-party database managed service provider to plan, orchestrate, and coordinate database upgrades, migrations and maintenance, and to plan and execute schema and data migrations in a 24x7 live production environment.

Skills and experience needed:

• Degree level education within computing or relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent commercial experience.
• Extensive technical experience in MySQL database administration and management, with AWS database services including RDS and Aurora.
• Extensive technical experience with NoSQL cloud-based database solutions in AWS (e.g. DynamoDB, MongoDB etc.).
• Solid understanding of replication and clustering high-availability techniques and technologies.
• Hands-on management and administration of databases focussing on maintaining performance, integrity, replication, upgrades, migration and security.
• Extensive query / performance optimisation experience.
• Experience in database environment life cycle management and support of production, staging and development environments.
• Strong experience with HashiCorp Terraform / Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and shell scripting skills.
• Strong experience with tools to assess the health of database systems like AWS Performance Insights, AWS CloudWatch or DataDog.
