Top social media trends 2019

Back to Blogs

Social media has become such a big part of our lives, not a day goes past that we don’t check our feed at least once a day!

It’s no longer just a place for family and friends to share old and embarrassing photos of you every Thursday. It’s become a business tool for many and a full-time job for others.

As a recruitment agency specialising in technology and its surrounding fields we want to stay up to date with all the social media trends happening.

Here are some of 2019’s top social media trends:

Influencer marketing

We all know about influencers, whether we follow them on social media or heard about them. The way influencers are being used to promote brands on social media is changing, comparing to when they first started online.

More specifically, companies are starting to partner with micro-influencers to increase their credibility.

You’re probably wondering, what is a micro-influencer? Well here it is, micro influencers are people on social media platforms who have a strongly engaged social media profile and a lot of followers but they don’t have a “celebrity status”. Micro-influencers typically have anywhere between 1,000 and 90,000 followers.

Once they start to reach the hundreds of thousands followers line, they start to be considered “celebrities”.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality has been around for a long while but each day we see something new appear on the market! For those who may not be familiar with AR, it’s taking something that’s real and altering it using technology.

A perfect example which was very popular all over the world last year was the Pokemon Go gaming app. The app accessed the user’s camera and added fictional elements to the screen. Now, social media platforms are taking the idea of augmented reality and implementing it on their platforms.

We’re all pretty familiar with Snapchat filters which is a great example of social media platforms using AR.

Ephemeral content

Have you heard of ephemeral content before? No? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one! But just because you’ve not heard of it doesn’t mean you’re not familiar with it.

Ephemeral content is something that is short-lived, lasting for up to 24 hours after which it disappears. Yes, you’re right! Things like Snapchat and Instagram stories. We're all very familiar with the  Snapchat concept, where you take a video or picture and put it as your story for the next 24 hours for your friends to see. Instagram quickly realised how well this idea is settling down with people and released their own versions which is built into their Instagram social media platform.

Short-lived content is so popular among people because it feels more authentic than a traditional sponsored advertisement. People love it and use apps like Snapchat to add such content to their personal profiles every day.

Brands are already starting to use these tools to promote their products and services, whether it’s through influencers or their own social media platforms.

Chatbots

Internet chatbots are great. We’ve all seen one somewhere on a website or one has pop up on a messenger. But like everything else, they are evolving.

Now chatbots are being integrated with social media platforms. Businesses are using chatbots to communicate with their customers on social media. This trend is growing at a rapid rate.
